Right now, ChatGPT isn’t great for expert research. But it is great for foundational research. For professors, this is a major plus: ChatGPT allows us to find out some major misconceptions about a topic quickly.

This activity allows professors to:

➢ Quickly focus on a pain point

➢ Brainstorm about how to address that pain point

➢ Design our lesson plans around that pain point

Here are the Steps:

Phase #1: The Skim

  1. Go into ChatGPT (click here to get into the system)
  2. Write something like this: “Hi, assistant. What are the 3 most common misconceptions about _______”

Phase #2: The Dive

  1. Look over the 3 pain points ChatGPT just generated. Choose 1.
  2. Respond to ChatGPT. Here are some options to help you out:
    1. “#2 is really interesting. Can you tell me more about it?”
    2. “#1 seems the most common to me. Do you have some tips about how to address it?”
    3. “#3 is surprising. Why do you think that misconception is so common?”

Phase #3: The Resurface

  1. Ask ChatGPT to generate 2-3 specific ways to address that pain point in a college class
    1. Bonus: let ChatGPT know if it’s an onsite, online, or hybrid class. It will tailor the advice
