The goal is to guide students as they get constructive feedback on their current thesis statements, by using ChatGPT. This allows them to refine their ideas before going through the lengthier time commitments of peer review and essay assessment.

By completing this activity, students practice:

➢ critical thinking

➢ communicating clearly and directly

➢ revising their own viewpoints

➢ predict future pitfalls

Here are the steps:

  1. Open ChatGPT (to do this, you can click here)
  2. Copy and paste these words: “Hi assistant! Can you please act as a writing expert? I will send you a thesis statement. I want you to poke holes in that thesis statement. To do this, please let me know (1) what problems you see with it and (2) what problems might come up as I write the paper around that thesis.”
  3. Read over ChatGPT’s feedback. Choose 1 of their points and ask for clarification using this template: “Thank you. How would you address #____?”
  4. Chat with ChatGPT until you feel satisfied with the conversation.
  5. Hold down “Ctrl” and “P” to print the transcript. Click on “Save as PDF” and save it to your computer. Then, you’re ready to upload it to the course’s LMS.
