It’s really difficult to encourage students to analyze Literature rather than summarize it.
We can teach the habit of literary analysis by using ChatGPT!
By completing this activity, students will practice:
➢ analyzing Literature
➢ embracing ambuigity
➢ critical thinking
➢ communicating clearly and directly
➢ revising their own viewpoints
Here are the steps:
- Go into ChatGPT (to do this, you can click here.)
- Copy and paste these words: “Hi, assistant. Act as an expert in Literature. I'm going to give you a passage. Then, I'm going to write the sentence "This passage is about..." and complete the thought. I want you to choose something else that the passage could be about, and push against me. Please don't go into explanations. I simply want you to push against me and ask for further clarification. Right now, I just want you to write back that you understand the assignment. I'll then send you the passage, followed by the statement, "This passage is about..." Then, we'll begin.”
- See what we did. ChatGPT is now primed to push against your reading. Good luck! 🙂
- Write against ChatGPT’s interpretation. Use it to support your own reading.
- Once you feel that the conversation has ended, hold down “Ctrl” and “P” to print the transcript. Click on “Save as PDF” and save it to your computer. Then, you’re ready to upload it to the course’s LMS.
